CANTON, GA — October 25, 2026 — The Georgia Kangaroos are celebrating an exciting achievement for one of their former players. Russel Tchewa, who played for the Kangaroos during the team's 2025 basketball season, was selected by the Windy City Bulls in the first round of the 2026 NBA G League Draft on Saturday, October 24.

Tchewa was selected with the 31st overall pick by the Windy City Bulls, the NBA G League affiliate of the Chicago Bulls.

For the Georgia Kangaroos organization, the announcement is more than exciting basketball news. It is an opportunity to celebrate a former Kangaroo, recognize his continued success, and express how proud the organization is to have been part of his basketball journey.

Once a Kangaroo, Always a Kangaroo

During the summer of 2025, Tchewa joined the Georgia Kangaroos following his collegiate basketball career at the University of Georgia, where he had been a starting center for the Bulldogs while pursuing graduate studies.

Standing 7 feet tall, Tchewa brought an impressive college basketball background to the Kangaroos. During the 2023–24 season at Georgia, he started 34 of 36 games, averaging 7.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while leading the Bulldogs in rebounding.

Before playing for the University of Georgia, Tchewa also competed at the University of South Florida and Texas Tech University. Originally from Douala, Cameroon, his basketball journey has taken him across countries, colleges, and competitive levels of the game.

His time with the Georgia Kangaroos in 2025 became another chapter in that journey.

While the Kangaroos certainly appreciated his basketball ability, the organization remembers Russel for more than his size, talent, and accomplishments on the court. He is also a great person, and the Kangaroos are grateful to have had the opportunity to know him and have him represent the team.

A Proud Moment for the Georgia Kangaroos

The Georgia Kangaroos believe that one of the most rewarding parts of professional basketball is watching players continue to grow and achieve their goals, even after their time with the team has ended.

Seeing a former Kangaroos player selected in the NBA G League Draft is an occasion worth celebrating.

Georgia Kangaroos Head Coach Brian Caswell, who had the opportunity to coach and get to know Tchewa during the 2025 season, expressed his pride in the former Kangaroos center.

“Many people know Russel as a great basketball player, but I was lucky to get to know him as a person and learn how much interest he had in business and life. I am happy to see his basketball career continue, but I am also confident he is going to do well in life by just being a great person.”

— Brian Caswell, Head Coach, Georgia Kangaroos

Caswell's comments reflect the organization's appreciation for Tchewa beyond his accomplishments on the basketball court.

For the Georgia Kangaroos, success is not measured solely by points, rebounds, wins, or championships. It is also about the individuals who become part of the organization, the relationships developed, and the opportunities that follow.

The Kangaroos are genuinely happy for Russel and excited about the opportunity ahead of him with the Windy City Bulls.

His selection represents another important step in his professional basketball journey, and the organization hopes it leads to even greater opportunities in the years ahead.

The Georgia Kangaroos will always take pride in the players who have worn the team's uniform. Their accomplishments remain meaningful to the organization long after they have moved on to the next chapter of their careers.

Congratulations, Russel Tchewa!
